have you tried rsgs? = Red speed game servers they are decent they filter attacks they also monitor attacks real fast Response if you submit tickets their FTP control panel super easy to use, they provide slots for 0.99 Per slot but a server like syles you probably could it it lowerd if you purchase 32 slots they have added D'dos protection Filter at like 20$ extra a month kinda spendy but they are pretty good host you could even ask if you could get the Extra D'dos protection if you stay with them for a good amount of time i know people in the past that got it for free.

Empathize with stupidity and you're halfway to thinking like an idiot.

I'm told by a network admin friend of mine that even mitigation is quite expensive. Protection from small attacks could cost you $300 monthly.

I think we just need to trace the IP and send Old Doctor to his/her house.

Well, in any case Kal Rsgs is pretty good. My friend's server was down, so I sent a support ticket in for him and they found out it was an attack so they got a tech engineer to work on preventing the attack. It was successful. He did not pay any cost for the ddos protection, just his normal service helped him. I really think Syle should get the added protection for the ddos for free as hes got a big server and longevity aswell.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

I hope you had good grammar when sending that support lol - Owned.

    WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG

As a security professional, I thank Kal for this (no really, I do this for a living). I almost punched my screen every time i saw the acronym butchered. On another note, it is NOT Syle's responsibility to contact the authorities about any attack, he doesn't even technically own the server (if it even is a real DDoS attack, which I HIGHLY doubt considering the first D in DDoS stands for DISTRIBUTED, as in multiple sources? What player do you know that has access to a fucking botnet or multiple workstations which they would use to keep a freaking roleplay server offline?!), it is the host's responsibility if they want to keep a client. Even then, I can promise you they would rather drop a small client (like this server) then go through the pain of processing paper work for an attack on a HALF-LIFE 2 FUCKING ROLE PLAY SERVER which both local law and FBI would laugh at in the grand scheme of their daily duties..

I am not knocking this server, I love it, but people need to understand that unless the attacks originating IP(s) correlate with those the local or federal gov't is investigating, it won't go anywhere. It would just be a huge waste of time for the provider. Trust me, I have extensive experience with this shit. If this was a real attack, it likely happened at the script/engine level (someone found a way to bring down the server by passing a command an inappropriate variable that broke the mod, or as East mentioned wrote a nifty client-side script that was a bit intense that would repeat quickly til the server went down).

Even then, it appears no one knows if it really was a DDoS or DoS attack.. It isn't that hard to watch network traffic for malicious patterns that would indicate such an attack.. anyone with access to the server could easily find it out. And if it was a single source or even a few sources, it would not be difficult to request your provider to block those IP(s). Until someone can actually come out and say "it was a DDoS, here is the proof from the server", I am going to assume it wasn't and it was either a mod/server/db/or provider based issue.

Just my like 56 cents.. since you know.. I kind of know about this stuff.

So please, do not come down on Syle or other server staff about down time. They are obviously doing all they can to solve the problem.
